He's signed to The Street's label: The Beats (which has a bunch of promising talent), and goes to show that Mike Skinner isn't a one trick pony. Two outstanding things from the album: Example is a playful word maker, and has the ability to craft a story that makes you feel like you were there. He's a damn funny man too, although some of the references are local to London - but you'll get the drift regardless. Secondly, his producer and long term collaborator, Rusher, is really very very good. Pin back your ear holes and check out the music on myspace (as long as you can fight past the design issues): http://www.myspace.com/leadingbyexample I'd also urge you to listen to an inspiring wee album by Frank Turner, the ex-frontman of English punk band Million Dead. It's a singer-songwriter album, largely him and guitar but again, the man can write lyrics and some fairly inspired musical lines as well. The album's called Sleep Is For the Week, can be found on the (proudly) independent Xtra Mile Recordings, and he's playing a few dates out your way at the moment, so catch him if you can (no, *seriously*).
