Prince Fucking Slays
Rick and Lisa were over this evening. We started talking about Prince for whatever reason and I brought up this video of Prince stealing the show at a Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame tribute to George Harrison:
Turns out Lisa is a huge fan of both George Harrison and Prince and the video made her cry. Sorry, Lisa.
Prince is amazing here. If you never thought of Prince as a guitar player, watch it to the end.
The best part is Tom Petty looking like he’s thinking, “Jesus get this guy off the stage,” while George Harrison’s son is giving the “Dude! It’s Prince! This is so rad!” face. I’m with George Jr.
Thanks to Paranorm for originally sending me this a while back.

What’s great about this clip is he’s obviously very familiar with the original – but he’s playing it as if Hendrix was invited to the session instead of Clapton.

Minnesota is in the house! I wish that Prince would put out a “guitar” album.

Thanks for that Ian. It’s strange that you “forget” how amazing a guitarist Prince is. Sharon and I saw him in Vegas last year (well, at least I did, as Sharon might have had a bit much of the Vodka and Redbull that AEG comp’d us), and it was a life changing experience. What an incredible ability to Jam that the man has – it was awe inspiring.

“I, I, Me, Me, Mine.” No one doubts Prince’s skill as a guitarist, but it’s his overwhelming ego that rules here: hardly the right tone for a tribute concert, and a tribute to George Harrison in particular. George would have been appalled.

What makes you think George would’ve hated it? I personally think Prince is one of history’s best guitarists and George certainly belongs on the list as well.
Not to be contrary, but I think George could appreciate a good guitarist.

Revisiting this video made my day.
re: George being appalled; I’m not a believer but I think if heaven is anything, it’s gotta include certain things becoming instantly self-evident, like the relative importance of high-heat public guitar massage and maintaining an appropriate “tone” for your “tribute concert”. Any dead person who seriously disapproved of Prince here, down to his strut off stage, hasn’t managed to shake off his mortal dopeyness.
What would you want happening at your tribute concert?
