Ghostface Is Mad At Y’All

Ghostface is pissed you didn’t buy his CD:

While I don’t think Ghost should be so surprised, I admire his direct approach.

Speaking for myself, it worked. I didn’t download the album for free, I read a mediocre review and just decided not to bother this time around. But after seeing this, I went over to Amazon and bought the MP3s.

I have to say, I’m glad I did. It’s pretty hot:

Ghostface Killah – We Celebrate
Buy The Big Doe Rehab from Amazon in MP3 format

No surprise. Ghost has been single-handedly holdin’ it down for the Wu for years.

Ghost, I bought the MP3s — do I still get a personal audience when you come to town or does that offer only stand for people who bought the CD?

Sorry, man, but I’m not buying the new Wu-Tang record. I’m not going to steal it, either. I just don’t care. That Beatles cover was WACK SABBATH. And I’m one of the 10 people that both BOUGHT and READ the Rza book. Even I have my limits.

Not sure I buy it. Sure, everyone’s downloading his album, but he’s doing poorly relative to other hip-hop albums which are also all being downloaded. DJ Drama and Scarface both had new albums that week, and they trounced him on Soundscan. Is he saying that his fans pirate his albums more than they’re pirating other artists? He’s probably comparing to first-week sales on his previous albums.

You’re right, Andy, no question that he’s not doing a full market analysis. I doubt that’s Ghost’s style, to be honest.

But I like the comparison he *is* making, 115,000 MySpace friends, 30K records sold. He’s appealing directly to those 115K friends and saying, yo, wassup?!

Also, I was kinda assuming the album sucked in comparison to surprising goodies like Fish Scale, but it’s pretty damn good actually.

I appreciate that he embraces the concept that markets are conversations, but it’s probably a bad idea to call out the people who didn’t pay for his music.

Generally, people who are willing to spend money on music will do so if they see value in it. Clearly, if these people are illegally downloading his album, they don’t see it worth the cost of purchase. Either reexamine the cost of the album or advertise its merits better to the potential buying population.

There are some people who are rarely willing to spend money on music, on whom no amount of public shaming will be effective. They should be ignored or treated with the same distaste as people who abuse anything labelled ‘free’ indescriminantly (office coffee parasites, for instance). Nothing will change their ways short of outright punishment, so why bother?

Lastly, the way in which he conveyed his message would seem to make the average listener less likely to purchase the album. All I hear is, “Hey you guys, c’moooohn…. motherf-cker.*” That’s not exactly the most graceful way to handle being jilted by the market.

I didnt know GhostFace was dropping and even if i did i probably wouldnt have bought the album anyway. Now and days i download music unless it is a classic!! Getting at his fans was a bad approach….Cant blame them much…We havent heard much of him or Wu in a while.

No offense, bee, but Ghostface has been putting out pretty solid records every year for the past six. In 2006 he came with 2, one was much better than the other but still:

Much more than you can say for any other member of the Wu.

Tis not for everyone, but I like the record. That track I’m linking to on this page is SMOKIN and has some classic lines.

Also his comment about “puttin all those samples on there” is kinda pointed. It’s not cheap to make a sample-heavy record these days. He keeps it pretty true. I’ll give him props, personally.

Stating the obvious here, but the guy is just frustrated and he is venting. He puts out great albums that don’t sell. I read an interview with him after Fishscale where he basically apologized to the label for the album’s low numbers. He seemed pretty defeated and embarrassed.
